About Tarot
The exact origin of the word Tarot is unknown but these are the suggested and possible origins, in no particular order:

Torah, Hebrew meaning the law

  • Taru, Sanskirt, deck of cards
  • Ta-Rosh, Egyptian meaning the royal way
  • Rota, Latin meaning wheel

The Tarot could be described as God’s Picture Book, or it could be likened to a celestial game of chess, The Trumps being the piece to me moved according to the law of their own order over a checkered board of the four elements - Lady Frieda Harris who painted Aleister Crowley’s Thoth Deck

In 1781 Court de Gebelin gave a strong argument that tarot originated from "The Book of Thoth" which was saved from burning in the Egyptian temples. It is noted that Thoth was an early king and the possible inventor of speech and writing. Paul Foster Case wrote in "The Tarot, a Key to the Wisdom of the Ages" that a pictorial book was written so different cultures could overcome the language barrier. Some believe Tarot relates to I-Ching while others still like the folk lore of the gypsies. we may never really know where Tarot began and if it was used as a divination tool centuries ago or if it was just a fancy card game. Stuart Kaplan gives an excellent but very brief introduction to the possible first tarot cards in the book "Tarot Classic".

Symbolism of the tarot card differs from the type of deck used and the reader of the cards. People are drawn to a deck because they have a connection or understanding of the symbolism used within the deck. Decks range from old wood carved ink representations to modern realistic new age decks. There are decks that focus on different animals, angels, mythical creatures, and many different cultures and religions. Some cards are designed to offer insight to material life while others like Zen cards are more focused on spiritual and self-growth concerns.

Almost every deck follows the general guidelines of a Major Arcana of the royal twenty-two picture cards and the fifty-six Minor Arcana which are basically four suits to make up the seventy-eight card tarot deck. If you want a brief short reading or a yes/no answer it can been done with just the Major Arcana but more details are shown with using the entire deck for a reading. When starting out a tarot reader will usually begin with learning and interpreting the Major Arcana first. As those skills are honed the Minor Arcana cards will be added in.

Interpretation is individual to the deck used and the reader. The FOOL card may mean a traveler, a youthful person, faults that a person refuses to accept, someone carrying extra baggage, spontaneity, rashness, ;levity, attachment to possessions, innocence, unlimited possibilities, beginning of a journey, creative poser, state of consciousness, not giving power to fear, ability to bring forth new ideas or feelings, new situation, new relationship, birth, creative vision, multiple talents, growth, journey, risk-taking, energetic, wonder, creativity, able to generate abundance... to list a few. The point is that each card means something to the reader and often what it mean depends on where it shows in the lay-out and depending on the other surrounding cards in the lay-out.

The layout used by the Reader is almost as varied as the desks. Some Readers will ask that you shuffle the deck, other will want you to cut the deck, some will not ever have you touch their cards. Then the lay-out itself is vastly different. If you want a yes/no answer the reader may use one, three, or five cards. If you want an answer to a specific question they may use one, three, or five cards in a row or do the common Celtic Cross lay-out. Again, the lay-out is an individual as the interpretations, and the vast variety of tarot cards used.

Tarot Readers have different methods, prices, and offer different services. Please feel free to browse through them all to discover the one that you feel would best suit your current interest.
